Compton Hosts Historical Know Your Rights Legal Forum

On Saturday, Dec. 7, the City of Compton hosted a historical Know Your Rights Legal Forum at the Douglas Dollarhide Community Center featuring Compton Mayor Aja Brown, The Cochran Firm’s managing partner attorney Brian Dunn, civil rights attorney and O.J. Simpson defense attorney Carl Douglas and his partner Jamon Hicks along with Ivie, McNeil and Wyatt immigration attorney Margarette Mow. The two-hour-long panel was moderated by Compton City Attorney Damon M. Brown and featured the dos and don’ts of interacting with the police and immigration officers.  The forum is first of several criminal justice reform discussions the City of Compton plans to host to empower its residents.

IMW Wins $887K Against Pasadena Unified School District

Another victory for prominent Los Angeles law firm Ivie, McNeil, Wyatt, Purcell & Diggs (IMW) came recently in a case against Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD).  The firm obtained a jury verdict of more than $887,000 against PUSD on September 11, 2019, after a one-week trial in Van Nuys. The jurors voted 11-1 in favor of the plaintiff, who had been a 14-year old Pasadena High School student when she was pressured into consensual sex with another student by the school’s security guard.

The Evolution of Bakewell Media’s Taste of Soul Festival

For 14 years, Los Angeles has enjoyed the annual Taste of Soul Family Food Festival on Crenshaw Blvd. The day-long festival presented by Bakewell Media boasts over 350,000 visitors just last year alone. Taste of Soul has become an institution in the Crenshaw community and draws people from L.A. and beyond, coming to enjoy live music and entertainment on more than five stages, delicious food from hundreds of vendors and shopping – including blocks and blocks of art, jewelry, clothing, beauty products as well as a plethora of free community services. The festival is family-friendly and known for being one of the largest and safest events in Southern California. Originally founded by Bakewell Media CEO Danny J. Bakewell, Sr. in 2005, Taste of Soul has grown exponentially over the years, and Mr. Bakewell says he can’t believe it’s been 14 years since its beginning.

Ivie, McNeill & Wyatt defeat $10M suit against County Coroner 

A Federal jury recently denied a woman monetary compensation in L.A. County, where she attempted to sue the coroner for falsely deeming her husband’s death a homicide and subsequently suggesting she was responsible. L.A based legal team Ivie, McNeill and Wyatt represented the coroner, Yulai Wang, helping him to avoid a $10 million pay out to the plaintiff, Lois Goodman, a professional tennis umpire.

Mourning The Death of Los Angeles Legal Giant Robert H. McNeill, Jr.

The legal community is mourning the passing of legal legend Attorney Robert H. McNeill, Jr., co-founder of Ivie, McNeill & Wyatt, California’s largest African-American owned law firm. Robert H. McNeill, Jr., affectionately known as “Bob,” had been a fixture in the Los Angeles community for over 50 years. He was born on January 7, 1941 and passed away April 17, 2016.

At the John M. Langston Bar Association’s 24th Annual Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, Robert H. McNeill, Jr., a founding partner of Ivie, McNeill & Wyatt, was recognized for his significant contributions to the legal community, the practice of law and the community at large for the past 36 years. During the ceremony, Katie Murff Trotter, Honorable H. Elizabeth Harris, William H. Hastie, Jr., and Honorable Bob Bowers, Jr., were also inducted into the Hall of Fame.
