Crews Race to Limit Damage from Major California Oil Spill

Crews on the water and on shore worked feverishly Sunday to limit environmental damage from one of the largest oil spills in recent California history, caused by a suspected leak in an underwater pipeline that fouled the sands of famed Huntington Beach and could keep the beaches there closed for weeks or longer.

There are new adjustments to the working sector that the mayor outlined, the mayor noted that four out of ten people already lost their jobs this year. Garcetti stated, “ With limited federal support, and the County Public Health Department new orders about outdoor dining, the city must step up to provide relief to restaurants, so tonight I can announce the launch of Secure emergency relief for vulnerable employees.”  This fund is open to a plethora of eateries including wineries and food trucks.

L.A. County Sheriffs Reach Agreement for Body-Worn Cameras

Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva announced today that the department has entered into an agreement with Axon Enterprise Inc. to deploy body-worn cameras on deputies. 

   “This was a 20-month battle since the very first week I took office to get this program up and running, and it is very important to transparency (and) my commitment to reform the department,” Villanueva said.

L.A. has seen a resurgence of outdoor activity, there has been added testing sites to handle the projected rise in positive cases. Gradually, Los Angeles has been opening different sectors in the work industry with the modified health directives. They serve as the armor against the spread of COVID-19 between guests and staff members. Small businesses are advised to open only when they are aligned with the public health mandates.

Ending Workforce Discrimination is Up to Us

During my tenure at the Conference of Minority Transportation Officials (COMTO), it became clear to me that access was the foundation of economic opportunity. The transportation sector lacked diversity, equity and inclusion, and this was glaringly obvious to both leadership and employees. Pathways began to emerge to grow a diverse pool of talent, but it was obvious that a more organizational framework was needed to operate at full capacity to best serve veterans, women, underrepresented, and underserved workers; groups that had been previously overlooked.

20 years ago, the people of California spoke and overwhelmingly passed the Compassionate Use Act, which made us the first state to legalize medical cannabis. California, as usual, was the trendsetter and innovator, recognizing the medicinal qualities of the cannabis plant. This trend then spread to 29 states, as well as the District of Columbia – where California goes, others follow.
