Multiple South Los Angeles Nonprofits Awarded $5.1 Million by Trauma Prevention Partnerships Initiative

In a significant boost to local violence prevention efforts, multiple South Los Angeles nonprofits were recently awarded $5.1 million in grants by the Trauma Prevention Partnerships Initiative, a collaboration between the Department of Public Health’s Office of Violence Prevention and the California Community Foundation. A renewed focus on these grants comes at a crucial time as the community observes Gun Violence Awareness Month in June, underscoring a shared commitment to reducing gun violence and promoting healing.

EmpowHer Institute Hosts Annual Girls to Greatness Teen Summit

On Friday, April 28, the EmpowHer Institute hosted over 500 girls from 13 schools at their annual Girls to Greatness Teen Summit at the Los Angeles Convention Center. This year’s theme, Leaders Today. Changemakers Tomorrow., was a declaration of power encouraging the girls to step into their purpose with confidence and commitment.

EmpowHer Celebrates 20 Years in the Community

For 20 years, the EmpowHer Institute under President Dawn L. Brown has supported girls and young women in underrepresented communities, ages 11-18, by teaching them necessary skills through education, training, and mentorship to prepare them for college and career opportunities.

SALUTE TO AFRICAN AMERICAN NONPROFITS

Several South Los Angeles nonprofits and their top executives were recognized at the Los Angeles Business Journal’s annual Nonprofit and Corporate Citizenship Awards. The awards honor individual organizations and leaders whose focus is to improve the communities they serve.  Finalists and winners and were recognized during the L.A. Business Journal virtual event in early May.
