Dr. Virginia Joy Simmons – Destination Crenshaw’s Senior Art Exhibition Advisor

Los Angeles has been a quiet hub for Black art since the 1960s.  With artists like Betye Saar, Melvin Edwards, and Noah Purifoy, creating community and exhibitions, Black art has become a staple in West Coast culture. Dr. Virginia Joy Simmons has diligently contributed to this movement and keeps Black stories alive through art collection and philanthropy.

Victory Praise Dance Featured Onstage at LA County’s Holiday Celebration

Victory Praise Dancers, led by Robin Deane, shone a light on the Crenshaw District with their performance at the 65th L.A. County Holiday Celebration, televised on Christmas Eve. PiYoDa Flow, the community space where VPD rehearses, serves the West Adams community across generations, with classes that honor African diasporic traditions, wellness, and urban dance.

From Lena Horne to Beyoncé, Universal College of Beauty School produces stylists to the stars

Celebrity hairstylist Tiffanie Dixon grew up mingling with young Hollywood while attending Beverly Hills High School, but for lessons in glamour, fashion and style, she drove to the Crenshaw District, where she later enrolled at the historic Universal College of Beauty.  Dixon would go on to become Whitney Houston’s longtime hair stylist, graduating in the same 1991 class with Kim Kimble, whose work with stars like Beyoncé led to her own multi-season reality TV show.  For four generations, over nearly 100 years, the family-owned Universal College of Beauty has turned out star stylists and beauty gurus by teaching the art of

Dr. Ena Paschall Marks 100th Birthday 

Family, friends and admirers joined together on March 2, to celebrate a century of living by Dr. Ena Paschall, a South Los Angeles educator who touched countless lives as the owner-operator of United World International Learning Center. 

Crenshaw’s Orthodox L.A. Gallery Hosts Contemporary Art Exhibit

Orthodox L.A. hosts “What’s Your Vibe?” The interactive multi-media installation is on display until November 1 at the gallery, which is located in Los Angeles’ Crenshaw district on 54th Street near 4th Avenue. The exhibit is produced and curated by Shalandrea Houchen, known professionally as Shay Renee.
