A little over fifty years ago, the Watts community revolted. After decades of neglect, brave leaders and neighbors rose up to demand solutions to the inequities that afflicted our community. The revolt was for a better future for the current residents, their children, and the generations to come. Ultimately, they demanded that our community should be one where residents have access to resources they need to thrive.

Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science (CDU) will kick-off a series of events to celebrate its 50th anniversary with celebrities Edward James Olmos, Rick Najera, and a panel of Los Angeles University leaders for a timely discussion on the absence of Latinos and African Americans in higher education. Events throughout the year will honor when CDU was founded 50 years ago, on August 3, 1966 following the Watts revolt, to address the inadequate access to education and healthcare in the community of Watts and greater South Los Angeles.
Loretta Jones, ThD, MA, founder of the Community Faculty program at CDU, recently received the Honorable Diane E. Watson Community Service Award and spoke at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, on August 7.
