Most of my life, I had real challenges with my father. He was absent, an alcoholic, and an abusive husband and father. I left home at sixteen. I lived a wild, wasteful life. I was very much the prodigal son.  

New Children’s Book, ‘I Love My Daddy,’ Further Dispels Myths about Black Fathers

The stereotype of the absent Black dad remains quite ubiquitous in popular culture. It often takes the form of a dysfunctional family unit, but in recent years, studies have proven that the stereotype is nothing more than a myth. That legend is further vaporized in the new children’s book, “I Love My Daddy,” by Maryland social worker and military veteran Juanita Banks Whittington.

My First Father’s Day: Redeeming a Legacy of Loss

Growing up, my family didn’t celebrate Father’s Day. My parents divorced, after nine years of marriage, when I was six-years old. My father was distant during the marriage, and he became even more estranged afterwards.
