Michelle Obama urges grads to vote to protect civil rights

JACKSON, Miss. First lady Michelle Obama told graduates of a historically Black university in Mississippi on Saturday that “the power of voting is real and lasting” and they need to cast ballots to protect civil-rights advances made by previous generations. She said many young African-Americans have disenfranchised themselves because only about 20 percent of them voted in the 2014 midterm elections.

Report: Blacks Lag Far Behind in Almost Every Measure of Economic Well-Being

In recognition of Black History Month, the Joint Economic Committee (JEC) and the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) last Thursday released an update to their 2015 report on the economic status of African Americans. The study finds that African Americans lag far behind white Americans in almost every measure of economic well-being in all 50 states.

Neutralizing the Right Wing Political Agenda

There’s a lesson to be learned from the Confederate flag quickly and unexpectedly falling into disfavor following the murder of nine Bible-studying African Americans, including the pastor, at Emanuel A.M.E. Church in Charleston, S.C. The lesson is that the economic clout of African Americans and their progressive allies can be used to pressure businesses to do the right thing, which in turn can keep the far right wing in check.
