Peterson vs. Khan bout canceled due to failed drug test.
There has been a major development in the boxing world. Aside from the most exciting and anticipated match up between Floyd Mayweather vs. Miguel Cotto that took place the weekend before last, which the pay per view buys went through the roof, Golden Boy Promotions has announced that the Lamont Peterson vs. Amir Khan long awaited rematch has been canceled due the fact that Peterson has tested positive for synthetic testosterone. The failed drug test was on March 19. Peterson won the first bout between the two.
It has been revealed that Peterson’s testosterone levels were recently diagnosed at the levels of a 70 to 80 year old man.
In November of 2011, roughly four weeks before he was scheduled to face Khan in Washington D.C. for their first match up, Peterson went to Dr. John Thompson D.O. at his Desert Oasis clinic where he was injected with one soy based testosterone pellet.
According to team Peterson, this was the first and last time he has had the procedure done.
Peterson did not disclose this when he took a random drug test this past March. If he had, he could have attempted to get a medical exemption. His management is making the case that he did not attempt to cheat by taking a banned substance, but he took it under the supervision of a medical doctor to treat a medical condition.
Barry Hunter, Peterson’s trainer and manager says, “I was aware of the doctors. The first time the doc really checked him, he checked for parasites. And once he saw there was none in his blood, he gave him a test to check his thyroid. Lamont had been getting lightheaded and I thought maybe he had a thyroid problem, which I made him go get his blood checked. And after he got his blood back from the doctor, that is when they discovered the testosterone thing.”
There is talk now of stripping Peterson of his title as a result of the failed drug test. Peterson has requested a hearing in Nevada and seeks to obtain a boxing license.
