Mayweather ready to fight Pacquiao, but promoter Bob Arum appears to hold on the cards.
Floyd Mayweather must have a guardian angel or some higher power watching over him, because he surely could have gone to prison for the alleged assault case he was recently sentenced to ninety days for. And on top of that, instead of turning himself in on the scheduled January 6 court date he was able to get the judge to defer his sentence six months so that he could fulfill his contractual obligations for a May 5 date.
But before anything can happen, the Nevada State Athletic Commission is seeking an explanation from Mayweather because of his conviction, as he is required to do so. According to Keith Kizer who is the executive director of the Commission, it’s not automatic that a license will be granted.
“The commission looks at experience, integrity, character, and skill to determine whether or not it’s appropriate to issue a license,” Kizer said.
The commission is known to reject applications, most famously denying Mike Tyson in 2002 after he was involved in a brawl at a New York City press conference.??It’s interestingly to note that Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum, who seems to be holding the cards for any possible bout with Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao, wants to build an outdoor arena that could possibly hold some 40,000 people as oppose to holding the bout at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, that’s only big enough for 18,000. Like they say, “If it don’t make dollars, it don’t make no sense.” ??Mayweather appears to be ready to fight Pacquiao, or at least that is the message that he is putting out there. He went to twitter to call out Pacquiao.
“Manny Pacquiao I’m calling you out let’s fight May 5th and give the world what they want to see,” Mayweather said in his first tweet. “My Jail Sentence was pushed back because the date was locked in. Step up Punk,” Mayweather tweeted a minute later.
Arum, who is Pacquiao’s promoter, said that his fighter will be in the ring on May 5, but not against Mayweather. An opponent for Pacquiao has not been named. ??In other news, there is a revealing documentary being screened in New York City this week that will be aired on HBO later this month entitled, “On Freddie Roach”.
The feature documents the future Hall of fame trainer as he deals remarkably with the challenge of Parkinson syndrome. The film takes you behind the scenes, and interviews those closest to him while he trains the many A-list fighters in his stable (Amir Khan, Peter “Kid chocolate” Quillian, and of course, Manny Pacquiao just to name a few). This should make for a great reality program as we go into the heart and soul of this man who’s not only accomplished so much in the ring, but has done quite a bit for the common man outside the ring. This is must see T.V.
