Okonjo-Iweala is 1st woman, African to lead world trade body

Nigerian economist Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala was appointed Monday to head the World Trade Organization, becoming the first woman and first African to take on the role amid rising protectionism and disagreement over how the body decides cases involving billions in sales and thousands of jobs.

Okonjo-Iweala, 66, was named director-general by representatives of the 164 countries that make up the WTO, which deals with the rules of trade between nations based on negotiated agreements.

The COVID-19 outbreak has globally left its mark. There’s been different results and reactions to the virus throughout the world. Africa has an environment already painted to have a fragile healthcare system. However, it’s been recorded to have the least quantity of cases and deaths when the virus began to spread in March. Africa is now beginning to prepare for the second wave of the viral transmission.

It is with profound sadness and shock to learn about the passing of my dear friend and brother, H.E. Jerry John Rawlings, former President of Ghana. I had the opportunity to work with brother Rawlings during his presidency while I was the U.S. Special Envoy for Africa and he played a vital role in restoring peace in West Africa especially during the Minor River crisis (Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone).

International Conference Celebrating the 55th Anniversary of The Nguzo Saba (The Seven Principles)

A wide range of Black scholars, activists, teachers, students and community members from the national and global African community will join in discussions of critical issues confronting Black people nationally and internationally which begins this Sunday, October 11, 3:00pm at the virtual International Nguzo Saba 2020 Conference and will continue over the month. The conference marks the 55th Anniversary of The Nguzo Saba (The Seven Principles), the Organization Us and the African American Cultural Center. Focus will be especially on the Nguzo Saba and their use by thousands of organizations and institutions in this country and throughout the world African community for value orientation, cultural grounding and programmatic initiatives.   

Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr. condemned the approved plan to stop US Foreign Aid to Ethiopia and called on Congress to Intervene.

News reports that U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has approved a plan to stop $100 million in U.S. foreign aid to Ethiopia, because of the country’s ongoing dispute with Egypt and Sudan over the Grand Ethiopia Renaissance Dam (GERD), finally confirmed what we all knew from the beginning, that the U.S. has never been an impartial mediator in this conflict and instead fully supportive of Egypt.
