Bernice Mitchell Passes Away

On January 17, 1942, Bernice Mitchell was born to Louie Bell and Daisy Lee (nee Smith) Mitchell in Rosston, Arkansas. She often talked of her mother’s kind and sweet disposition and her love of shopping—a hobby she inherited. She frequently bragged about how her father, who spent lots of time hunting and fishing, loved her cooking.

Reflections on the Life of Captain Shaheed Muhammad 

Nation of Islam Captain Emeritus Shaheed Muhammad stood tall and strong at 6’7” in his life, which he dedicated to helping the Black man and woman of America.  He passed away on May 20, and at his Muslim funeral service or janazah, many of the very men he sacrificed his life for stood just as tall for him during a special prayer service. 

Derf Reklaw, Renowned Jazz Musician, Succumbs

While in Los Angeles, Derf’s musical endeavors continued to soar.  He performed throughout Europe with jazz musician Eddie Harris. He toured around Canada with rock musician Burton Cummings. His command of his craft took him to South Africa’s Joy of Jazz Festival playing alongside jazz singer Dwight Trible.

Rest in Peace – Linda Lanier

The community lost another angel with the passing of Linda Lanier, who left this world for eternal rest with the Heavenly Father on April 15. She was 70 years old.

Michael Angelo Houlemard, Sr. peacefully transitioned to his heavenly home on April 1, 2022, after a full day surrounded by generations of his adoring family. He was admired and will be missed by too many to list, revered for his teaching career, respected for his baseball and ping pong prowess, sought for his home building and repair skills, and known for his caring ways, speaking truth, spiritual sense of the world, and passionate support for family and friends. Gerald Francis Luke Sr. was born June 10, 1944, to the late Joseph and Lillie Luke in New Orleans, Louisiana. A native of New Orleans, Gerald completed his high school education at George Washington Carver High School.
