Some of the works waiting for art lovers at the Museum of African American Art

The museum offers some of the best African and Black American art around.

If you like art, well you don’t have to go very far to see some interesting and fantastic works. The Museum of African American Art (MAAALA) Los Angeles holds some of the most famous works by African and Black American artists around.

Dr. Samella Lewis, an artist and art historian and a group of artists, academic, business and community leaders, founded MAAALA as a nonprofit museum in1976. Together, the group’s goal was to increase awareness of Black and African American art in the community.

MAAALA’s mission is to present artist and art that addresses, highlights and expounds on the experiences through the Black Diaspora. The museum holds many collections of paintings, sculptures and other mediums. MAAALA serves as hub for the local art community of the Crenshaw District and has been host to many functions.

Some of the collections on display include the Palmer C. Hayden, which include 40 works on permanent display. Sentinel’s cartoonist, David G. Brown’s exhibit is on an extended display, showcasing some of the artist’s sketches and cartoons featured in the LA Sentinel Opinion section.

The Museum of African American Art is located on the 3rd floor of Macy’s at the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza in Los Angeles. For more information, please visit www.maaala.org/.
