Dr. Ashley Wiley Johnson, vice president of the Los Angeles Speech and Language Therapy Center Inc., convened a gathering in support of Culver City Mayor Yasmine McMorrin who is up for re-election.
Wiley Johnson conveyed, “It is our duty to support leaders who demonstrate unwavering commitment and dedication through their consistent, hands-on work. Mayor Yasmine McMorrin exemplifies this ethos. Her visibility, youthful energy, and relentless passion for transforming our communities into better places to live, work, and play are truly inspiring.

James Daughrity, principal broker of Daughrity Real Estate, welcomed guests and shared the many reasons that he was compelled to support Culver City Mayor Yasmine-Imani McMorrin including her integrity. Triston Ezidore, vice president of Culver City School Board, also spoke about the ways that McMorrin has brought positive change to Culver City.
He mentioned that she led Culver City in its efforts to successfully shut down a gun store only blocks away from a major public school by purchasing the property. Ezidore introduced Mayor McMorrin, who spoke about some of her successes such as the Culver City mobile mental health clinic which provides services to those without other access.
In terms of preserving quality air and environmental resources she closed down the Culver City section of the urban oil field adjacent to a major soccer field in the area. She also fought to add childcare to City Council meetings not only for her own daughter, but also for the general public interested in attending to make public comments during council meetings.
Finally, she addressed the housing crisis saying that she wants Culver City to be a place that is affordable for her daughter to live as a young adult.
“When I think about housing, I think about welcoming new neighbors whether that be fellow parents or our staff members who travel long distances to come to work and law enforcement as well,” McMorrin said.
“We just want to make sure that we are creating a community that is open and welcoming to as many neighbors as we can. That means we’re streamlining and supporting and incentivizing building here. That’s a priority for me to really tackle this housing crisis by really locking arms (across agencies) and to support more housing in Culver City and in the region.”
Urging guests to help re-elect McMorrin, Wiley Johnson demonstrated her commitment to supporting young political leaders. In fact, she and her godmother, Mattie McFadden Lawson, started the Young Women’s Pipeline Leadership of Southern California. As part of that initiative, college age members of Grace and Wisdom Institute (GAWI) volunteered at the event.
Led by Kesha Knighten Hughes, GAWI is a non-profit whose mission is to cultivate deeper personal, social, and community awareness through life skills development and training for teens with an emphasis on teen girls of color.
Hughes shared, “We not only are creating awareness, but we are providing experiences for our teens to apply life skills development. GAWI students have the opportunity to learn about building their student résumé, interview preparation, along with the importance of communication skills. They receive opportunities to observe and engage with professionals and community leaders gaining insights and further developing their confidence which expands their ideas about possibilities.”
