The impact of diversity and inclusion achievements rang boldly and beautifully in the elegant setting of Greystone Park, Beverly Hills on Thursday, April 19, 2018 when the USC Black Alumni Association honored four outstanding Women of Troy. Drawing upon the symbolism of the newly installed Queen Hecuba at the USC Village, representing the cultural diversity of USC Women, the USC BAA highlighted the accomplishments of Yasmin Davis ’17, ’19, USC Dornsife College/Keck School of Medicine (Outstanding Scholar), Dr. Renée Smith-Maddox, Clinical Professor, USC Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work (Outstanding Faculty Champion), Assemblymember-elect Sydney Kamlager-Dove ’94, USC Dornsife College (Outstanding Community Champion), and Terri Holoman ’81, USC Marshall School of Business (Outstanding Alumna). The evening included dinner in the historic Greystone Mansion, with an awards presentation reception in the courtyard. USC BAA scholarship recipients most closely reflecting the aspirations of each “Hecuba” presented heartfelt tributes to the honorees. Due to the evening’s success, $400,000 will be awarded as future scholarships.
Established in 1976, the USC Black Alumni Association is a leading cultural alumni affinity organization nationally, with a primary focus upon scholarship provision for USC Black undergraduate and graduate students. The USC BAA has provided over $6 million in annual scholarship assistance for nearly 3,000 students, and has raised an additional $4.5 million in endowment contributions and pledges. An additional highlight of the evening was the presentation of a “surprise” Hecuba award to USC BAA Executive Director, Dr. Michèle G. Turner. For all in attendance, “Envisioning Hecuba” was a treasured evening to remember, and a successful benefit in support of a worthy cause.
