USC BAA and Students Closing the Pinning and Affirmation Ceremony (Shelby Stephens/L.A. Sentinel)

The USC Black Alumni Association (USC BAA) Welcome Pinning and Affirmation Ceremony is a cherished tradition open to all newly admitted Black undergraduate and graduate students. On Saturday August 24, the USC BAA, USC faculty, and staff spent the afternoon welcoming the newest members of the Trojan family and provided historical context regarding the legacy of USC’s Black Trojans at Founder’s Park on USC’s campus. More than 100 students attended and received USC adinkra symbol pins to usher them into the upcoming school year.

The incoming students enjoyed an eventful program coordinated by USC alumni Simeon Stewart, with addresses from Executive Director of USC BAA Jasmine Taylor, Associate Dean for Religious and Spiritual Life Rev. Dr. Brandon Harris, Senior Director of Career Engagement Lori Shreve, and live drum performances by Brother Hanif and Uncommon Sense.

Sister Abrafi Sanyika (Shelby Stephens/L.A. Sentinel)

One of the most moving demonstrations was the Libation Ceremony and Calling of Ancestors initiated by Founder and Director of the Egyptian Repertoire Company Sister Abrafi Sanyika. This ceremony is reminiscent of Black traditions used to honor those who have passed away and transitioned. Sister Sanyika reminded the students of who they are and where they are going.

During the ceremony alumni called out the names of individuals who were the first to make history as inaugural changemakers; the First Black Student, the First Black Justice in California, the First Black Journalism Graduate, and the First Black USC All-American. Inspiration filled the park as each name was called and as each libation was collected. The ceremony concluded with members of the Black Trojan family pinning the newly accepted students with the adinkra symbols representing the attributes of the successful Trojan Scholar.
