The Dorsey Dons used their rushing game to defeat the Crenshaw Cougars 28-3. Both teams now have a 4-3 overall record. The Dons are now 2-0 in the Coliseum League, tied at first with the King/Drew Golden Eagles.
“It’s a legacy here at Dorsey, it’s history,” said Dorsey senior quarterback Brandon Tolson. “We’re just building our team, only thing we can do is get better.”
Cougars sophomore Samuel Richard forced a turnover on Dorsey on their first possession. His return placed Crenshaw in a first-and-goal situation but the Dons implemented a defense that forced the Cougars to kick a field goal.
The Cougars picked off the Dons early in the second quarter but were unable to convert the possession into points. Dorsey found their offensive footing on the ground. Junior running back Makhi McCluster committed a 40-yard touchdown rush. This was the first of three touchdowns McCluster made in the matchup.

“Our running game, we get it going with the guys up front,” Tolson said. “Our front five are the biggest guys in the City Section; we run the ball behind those guys.”
McCluster made his next touchdown late in the second quarter, giving the Dons a 12-3 lead going into halftime. He then returned the second-half kickoff to score.
Another strong rusher on the team is senior running back Ja’Marion Broughton. A challenge for him was going from a safety to a running back.
“I just started playing running back,” Broughton said. “I feel like this game gave me a little confidence, but I could have did better.”
It was a game of complementary football for the Dons as they rarely allowed the Cougars entry to their red zone.
“We have a good defense, we just need to work on tackling in the secondary,” said senior defensive back Kayshon Lee. “We can play zone very well.”
Through the adversity, Crenshaw senior signal caller Sir rey Tyler-Matthews advanced on scrambles. However, the Cougars struggled to create long drives and convert on third and fourth downs.
Early in the fourth quarter, Tolson connected with junior Donoven Elzein for a 68-yard touchdown play. A successful two-point conversion stamped the Dons at 28 points.
Crenshaw and Dorsey will have away games on October 18 at 7:30P.M. The Cougars will battle the Washington Prep Generals and the Dons will clash against the Dymally Challengers.
