A block party like none other was staged by the residents of Potomac Avenue in the Crenshaw Manor neighborhood of South Los Angeles.
Organized by Jennifer Smith, the event invited scores of homeowners to “meet and mingle with other neighbors – some residing in Crenshaw Manor since its establishment in the 1940s,” noted Smith. Refreshments were available along with music and fun.
“We opened with the Dorsey High School Drumline and also had a DJ to keep the mood lively. Other highlights were line dancing by Virginia Griffin and her colleagues from the senior dance group, a live band formed by our own resident Jimmy Williams, a Samba solo dance by Ginnia Hargins, principal of Stella Middle School, spoken words, and the finale by the Polynesian Dance Group,” Smith said.
In addition, Mayor Karen Bass and Councilwoman Heather Hutt attended to enjoy the festivities and also recognize one of the oldest residents on Potomac Avenue – Ms. Suzie Robinson, who celebrated her 100th birthday of Sept. 11.
“We had a grand time at our first annual block party,” shared Smith. “It was an opportunity to spotlight the community and police alliance along with organizations that enrich the quality of life.
“Those attending gained information about local businesses and city services that help make this area a great place to live, work, shop and play.”
