As September is National Preparedness Month, Crenshaw Christian Center (CCC) executed a series of life-saving activities to equip congregants, local residents and businesses with information and resources for their personal and family wellbeing.

Preparedness experts advise having a plan of action in the event of a natural disaster since emergency first responders will not be able to reach every household in a timely manner.

Efforts began with a Seniors Fellowship on Sept. 8 where Dr. Anat Louis of the L.A. City Department of Aging and Osas Otasowie of the American Red Cross shared actionable tips tailored specifically for seniors.

All 300 attendees were given a free “Go Kit” filled with essentials, and were encouraged to place copies of important documents such as ID, insurance papers, social security card, house deed, a small amount of money, a whistle and a flash drive of valuable photos into a Ziploc bag. The Ziploc bag should then be placed in the freezer, as a refrigerator can withstand fire damage, and the items will aid in rebuilding efforts.

On Sept. 13, CCC was honored at the White House by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for exemplary participation in the Building Resilience with Diverse Communities engagement process.

This comes as part of the ministry’s ongoing efforts to educate and connect residents with relevant resources, including a hosted, free community-wide Disaster Preparedness Fair. Pastor Price, First Lady Angel Price, Mrs. Angela Evans, Allen Crabbe, Jr. and Michael Lynch were presented with award certificates during the Sept. 18 worship service by representatives of the City of L.A. Emergency Management Department who were part of the delegation that attended the White House ceremony.

On Sept. 17, CCC volunteers set out on foot to install smoke alarms in homes in need, as part of American Red Cross’ Home Fire Prevention Campaign. According to the American Red Cross, home fires are the number one type of disaster within the South L.A. area.

Crenshaw Christian Center is located at 7901 S. Vermont Avenue in Los Angeles. To learn more, call the church office at (323) 758-3777.
