The California Housing Finance Agency Homeownership Relief Corporation announced that aid is still available to those who missed at least two mortgage payments or one property tax payment. The funding is available through the California Mortgage Relief program.
If you are an applicant who has already received funding from this program, you can apply to receive assistance again. The program intends to help Californians get back on track, and you do have to repay the funds received from this program.
The California Mortgage Relief program offers up to $80,000 to low and moderate homeowners who are behind at least two mortgage payments and behind on their taxes because of financial hardships related to COVID-19. Applicants must have missed at least two mortgage payments by August 1, 2023, and are currently behind on their mortgage payments. Applicants must have missed at least one payment for property tax assistance.

The program defines financial hardship as reduced income or experiencing increased living expenses due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Increased living expenses can include medical expenses, utility costs, and additional people living in the household. To begin the process, the following documents are required: a mortgage statement, bank statement, utility bill, and income documentation (pay stubs, tax returns, or unemployment documents).
Other requirements for the grant include the home in question must be your primary residence, you may own only one property, but it can have up to four units, and your mortgage servicer must participate in the program. According to the 2022 California Housing Finance Agency Annual Report, a total of 5,118 households received funding in Los Angeles County. The average amount received per household was $29,199. Of the LA County households, 1,086 identified as Black or African Americans, 1,996 as Hispanic or Latinx, and 1,856 as White.
