Known for her irresistible cakes and artisan desserts, Chante Bernard invites everyone to stop by and experience the love and passion behind each sweet creation at the 19th Annual Taste of Soul Family Festival on Saturday, Oct. 19, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., on Crenshaw Blvd.
This is the fourth Taste of Soul festival Cakes by Chante will be participating in and Bernard shared how she will plan for this year.
“I really need to come prepared, the Taste of Soul is the largest food festival of the year and I just want to make sure that I come with a lot of products and that we work really hard to move the line quickly, while still providing excellent customer service that I always want my team to provide,” Bernard said.
The owner and founder of Cakes by Chante fondly recalls the origins of her journey—rooted in the love story of Bernard’s parents, who celebrated their wedding on September 8, 1973. Among the gifts they received was a vibrant lime green Hamilton Beach cake mixer, a symbol of a beautiful destiny that would unfold over the years.
From their union, Bernard was born on July 3, and as soon as she could reach the kitchen counter, Bernard began whipping up delectable masterpieces with that beloved mixer. She embraced her passion and dedicated her energy to perfecting the skill of baking, which resulted in eager requests for more of her delicious delicacies.

In a previous exclusive interview with the Los Angeles Sentinel, Bernard shared that she was in the progress of taking Cakes by Chante on the road with a customized food truck, making her passion for baking a full-time job.
Recently, Bernard shared the details of her business expanding after leaving her full-time corporate job in April of this year.
“What’s been new is being out in the field and participating in events for all of my orders. I reached a new audience participating in a lot of these festivals like the Taste of Soul, jazz festivals, wine festivals and farmer markets. More people are finding out about me and my business,” Bernard stated.
While many believe that her classic red velvet cake is a must-try, Bernard also offers unique variations such as Lemon Raspberry cake. This zesty creation includes a hand-crafted lemon cake stacked with raspberry sauce, lemon curd and fresh raspberries, all topped with a rich lemon cream cheese icing. Bernard mentioned another top seller is her Coconut Pineapple delicacy.
Since 2021, the Cakes by Chante food truck has been fully operational, and Bernard spends her time as an abundantly working business that continues to grow in popularity. Reflecting on what it means to be a Black woman-owned business, Bernard shared her newfound success.
“Baking is liberating for me, it’s more than just cake; it’s about making memories for my clients and uplifting my community,” Bernard said.
The owner and founder of Cakes by Chante wanted to share her gratitude for patrons who contributed to the growth of her business.
“Thank you to the people who have supported my business, the Sentinel and the team for always supporting me. Look out for me now that Cakes by Chante will be on the road full-time,” Bernard said.
The legacy of her parents’ love is symbolized by that original lime green mixer, which now holds a special place in her mobile bakery.
