Visit Big B’s – one of the popular vendors at the 18th Annual Taste of Soul Family Festival
This year, do yourself and your loved ones a huge favor and plan to enjoy “Woo Wop” found only at Big B’s Bobbie Q, a popular vendor at the 18th Annual Taste of Soul Family Festival on Saturday, October 21.
What is the “Woo Wop?” The woo wop is the combination of the falling off the bones, barbequed meat, seasoned just right, and smoked to perfection, combined with made-from-scratch sauce created by Byron Hansbrough, known as “Big B.”
The L.A. Sentinel spoke with Hansbrough learn more about his business.
L.A. Sentinel: The name Big B’s Bobbie Q really stands out. Where did it come from?
Byron Hansbrough: The word Bobbie came from my favorite uncle. He was the uncle that was always drunk, and he always had that little cigarette hanging out of his mouth. He never said barbeque, he always said, “Bobbie Q.” I wanted him to be a part of this business, so that’s how I got the name Bobbie Q from.
LAS: How long have you been in business and where is your business located?
BH: We’ve been in business since 2006. We’re in Los Angeles at 5968 South Figueroa Street, off of Figueroa and 60th. We’re open on Saturdays, Sundays, and all BBQ holidays [from] 12:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.
LAS: So, is it best to just come and see what you have on the menu, or should people order ahead? Do you do catering? How does that work?
BH: Every Saturday and Sunday we have dinners, so you can just come on by and place your order. Sometimes people do pre-orders. If you want to order a couple slabs of ribs, or a tray of links, and things like that, you will have to pre-order that. And yes, we do catering. Just give us a call and we’ll take care of you.
LAS: What’s on your menu, and what are some of your specialties?
BH: We smoke pork ribs, beef ribs, rib tips, chicken, chicken wings, beef links, beef brisket, smoked turkey wings, smoked pork chops, and we even smoke oxtails. [But] the only time we serve the smoked oxtails is on our Soul Food Sundays on every last Sunday of the month.
LAS: What else do you serve on Soul Food Sundays?
BH: We also have a variety of soulful sides like; mac and cheese, greens, candied yams, dressing, baked beans, and potato salad.
LAS: Do you sell anything a la cart, like drinks and desserts?
BH: Yes, we have a four-cookie banana pudding; German chocolate cake, 7UP pound cake with lemon cream cheese icing, peach cobbler pound cake, caramel pound cake, red velvet cake, and we also have a strawberry cheesecake poundcake.

LAS: Can you tell you one more thing that we should know about Big B’s Bobbie Q?
BH: What makes us stand out from the rest is that we don’t put sauce on our meats. Sauce comes on the side. We want you to experience the seasoning and taste that real wood smoke. We don’t hide behind our sauce. One of our slogans here is “one time in your mouth” that’s all it takes. One of the biggest things we are known for, is what we call the “Woo Wop.”
LAS: Where did that term come from?
Big B: Back in the day when I used to drink, I was cooking one day and the sauce was so good, I just said, “That’s that Woo Wop right here.” The sauce was so good that day, we’ve used that term ever since.
