Boys 100
Dorsey’s Lee Lawson pulled away with the boy’s 100-meter dash, winning the title with a time of 10.69. He was a part of Dorsey’s 4×100-meter relay team, which blew away the field. They ran a time of 41.77, nearly half of a second ahead of second place Taft.
Girls 100
Westchester’s Destinee Brown nearly broke the CIF Los Angeles City Section record in the girl’s 100-meter dash. She easily ran away with the race, clocking in with a time of 11.69. The record is 11.68. She also won the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.20.
Boys 400
Dorsey took the top three places in the boy’s 400-meter dash, with Billy Vaughn (right) leading the way. He won the race with a time of 47.78. He was also on Dorsey’s winning 4×100-meter relay and 4×400-meter relay teams. They won the 4×400 with a time of 3:17.49. Three of the members of that team are juniors.
Boys hurdles
There was controversy in the boy’s 110-meter hurdles. Dorsey’s Reggie Bell (middle) was the clear favorite, as he won the title last year and he has led the state this year. Just before the starter was going to call the competitors into the starting blocks, an official told Bell that he could not compete in the jersey that he was wearing. Bell had to sprint into the stands, grab another jersey and sprint back to make the start of the race. The back and forth sprint was a good 150 meters. As soon as he returned, without any rest, the sprinters were called into the blocks. Not surprisingly Bell, who came into the City meet with a time of 14.3, ran a 14.87, and he finished in fourth place, knocking him out of the State meet. Dorsey protested, saying that Bell should have been notified much sooner, but initially the protest was denied. That ruling has been overturned, and he will be able to compete in the State track meet. Bell said that he had worn that jersey all season without a problem. North Hollywood’s Sike Azu Irondi (right) won the race with a time of 14.31. Bell went on to win the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 39.26.
Girls 100 hurdles
Carson freshman Jeannette Paul started off her great day with a victory in the girl’s 100-meter hurdles, with a time of 14.46. Dayna Hurd took third place in the race, but later in the meet she won her third consecutive City Section title in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 45.53. She was also on Carson’s winning 4×100-meter relay team, who won with a time of 47.78. Carson took second place in the 4×400-meter relay, second to Dorsey, who won with a time of 3:54.94.
Girls 400
The event that follows the 100-meter hurdles is the 400-meter dash. After her win in the hurdles, Carson freshman Jeannette Paul (5) won the 400 with a time of 55.13. Later in the meet she took second place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.42.
Boys high jump
Birmingham’s Thomas Cheval doubled up in titles. He won the high jump with a mark of 6-08.00, and he won the triple jump with a mark of 46-5 ½.
Girls triple jump
For a second consecutive year, Narbonne junior triple jumper Ashley Anderson takes home the title. She had a winning jump of 39-05.50.
