Our Authors Study Club, Inc. of Los Angeles (OASC), an organization dedicated to making the world more aware of, more connected to, and more invested in the African American and the African diaspora experience, and the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA) announced an open call for entries in the 2024 African American Heritage Guide (AAHM).
The annual publication will list citywide events from February 1, 2024, in honor of Dr. Carter G. Woodson, considered by many as “the father of Black History,” and through March 31, 2024, which is National Women’s Month. The deadline for entries is November 28.
According to Lura Daniels Ball, president of Our Authors Study Club, “This open call for entries for the 2024 African American Heritage Guide is an significant opportunity to share our history in a diverse and meaningful way.

“We are excited to continue our partnership with the City of Los Angeles and the Department of Cultural Affairs to create a comprehensive and inclusive keepsake guide that documents local artists and will shine a light on the rich contributions of Black Americans for years to come.”
The AAHM cultural guide outlines contributions made by Black Americans in culture, education, politics, business, technology, and the arts. Through the guide, Daniels Ball said that OASC hopes to ignite conversations around the African and African American experience.
“As a extensive calendar and cultural guide that lists the numerous in-person and online activities, events, exhibitions, lectures, and programming related to this annual celebration of Black History life and culture, [the guide] continues to expose a diverse audience of Angelenos to the great works of local visual and literary artists, and encourage their appreciation of Southern California’s African American past artistic traditions and today’s modern, contemporary styles of all ages,” noted Daniels Ball.
“The main goal is to inform Angelenos across the southland of these exciting cultural activities and programming, and encourage them to participate in the celebration; experience the art and literary contributions, and learn about the many contributions of known and unknown Black Americans.”
To submit events or activities for the AAHM cultural guide occurring between Feb. 1, to March 31, 2024, visit www.oascla.org/events to download and complete the programming form. Email the completed form to [email protected]
Images of art or literary works are also accepted. Email high-resolution images (300 DPI or larger) and short works of poetry appropriate for publication to [email protected]. Include all credit information for the works submitted.
All ages are welcome to submit entries, said Daniels Ball, who added, “Your work may also appear on DCA’s website at culturela.org and in other DCA publications.” The deadline for submissions is Nov. 28.
