This Taste of Soul vendor is offering healthier options of familiar food.

Ok, you’re at Taste of Soul (TOS) but, you live a plant-based, eating lifestyle. Is there anything for you here at the biggest family festival in Los Angeles? Yes, there is, you need to find your way over to Hugh’s Hot Bowls (HHB).

At the beginning of the pandemic in 2020, HHB was established in response to restaurants being shut down. Owner & chef, Hugh Augustine, wanted to do something to help address the needs that were rising in the community.

“I decided to sell $10 plant-based meals from my home to combat food insecurity while so many were uncertain about patronizing businesses in the community,” said Augustine.

He continued, “I started my business to aid in the health journey of my community.”

Augustine was born and raised in Los Angeles, between Leimert Park and Baldwin Hills, and attended Loyola High School, class of 2009. His first TOS was in 2022 and he shared that he had a great time.

“The day started off slow because of the rain, but we were pleased to see the community come out and enjoy the festivities,” said Augustine. “We had one of our best vending days and sold out!”

So, what can you expect from HHB? How about Jackfruit Tacos?

“They are packed with robust flavor and topped with our house made avocado salsa,” said Augustine. “Many people have never had jackfruit before, but after trying one, they are hooked.”

If you’ve just started a plant-based lifestyle or you’ve been a vegan for years, TOS has something for you. HHB can check off your list of good food without the meat.

“We put love into all of our food,” said Augustine. “The purpose of Hugh’s Hot Bowls is to provide tasty plant-based meals that are familiar to the culture.”

Augustine continued, “We look forward to returning to TOS and sharing our healthy options with the community.

“Hopefully this event can introduce more people to our business and a plant-based lifestyle.”
