Supervisor Holly Mitchell, Charles Dickerson, Capri Maddox Esq., and five students will be saluted at the 45th Annual Scholarship Awards and Fundraiser Luncheon sponsored by the 10th Council District Women’s Steering Committee (10th CDWSC).

The gala affair takes place on Saturday, June 24, at 11 a.m., at the Proud Bird Grand Ballroom West, 11022 Aviation Blvd., in Los Angeles. The theme is “Embracing in Inspiring the Future: Education – Women – Diversity.”

ABC7 news anchor Leslie Sykes will be the emcee and Attorney Areva Martin will be the keynote speaker. The Rev. J. Edgar Boyd, pastor of First AME Church of Los Angeles, will deliver the invocation and blessing.

“We are excited to present this luncheon and recognize outstanding individuals of all ages for the 45th consecutive year,” said 10th CDWSC President Jacqueline Nunn. “The public is invited to attend and enjoy an uplifting and enlightening program.”

Mitchell, Maddox and Dickerson will be recognized for their contributions to the betterment of the community.   Mitchell, who represents the 2nd Supervisorial District, has spearheaded several intiatives to alleviate poverty and improve the quality of life for county residents.

Maddox, executive director of the LA Civil Rights Department, implemented a number of award-winning campaigns to combat hate and violence in the community. Dickerson, executive director and conductor of the Inner City Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles, has mentored scores of young musicians and led ICYOLA in performances around the nation.

During the program, $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to the college-bound students.  The recipients are Summer Alexander, Laylah Cooper and Anderson Moore of Dorsey High School; Epiphany Goins of Los Angeles High School, and Phandie Pugh of Los Angeles Center for Enriched Studies.

“Our Scholarship Committee did a great job again this year with selecting our 2023 recipients and I want to commend Chair Julie Cox,  and committee members Sandra Fort, Johnnie Loyd, Sharlene Mosley, and Angela Simon,” said Nunn.

“Also, a big thank you goes to our sponsors, especially L.A. Department of Water and Power, US Bank,  and West Basin Municipal Water District. Our luncheon would not be possible without their support,” she added.

The luncheon will also include door prizes, raffle and entertainment by guitarist and vocalist Daryl Darden.
