The Washington Prep Generals football team is starting a new season and a new era with a victory. The Generals defeated the Hollywood Sheiks 32-7.

Washington Prep not only has a new coach in Frank Rice but a newly refurbished field. Rice put emphasis on this game as the team trained during the summer.

“All eyes are on us right now,” Rice said. “Even though they went to the championship last year, we had some challenges coming in. We’ve been able to mitigate all of those challenges.”

This also marked the first game as quarterback for junior Shane Sullivan.

The Generals scored three touchdowns in the second half. Sullivan noted that he told his teammates to trust in him during halftime.

“We argued in the second quarter,” Sullivan said. “We went back in the locker room, talked it out and realized that it’s only so much I can do with so much time.”

Caleb Boyer gave Hollywood a strong start and was a key player that helped the team score a touchdown early in the second quarter. A successful extra-point kick gave them a one-point lead.

Boyer knew how to make first downs on the rush but the Generals worked to counter his efforts.

“The linebackers was right where their assignments was,” Sullivan said. “They cleaned up the job.”

Going into the third quarter, Washington Prep had a 12-7 lead. With 5:21 left in the phase, Hollywood punted the ball on fourth down and Washington Prep senior  Ma’Hari Jarmon returned the ball for a touchdown. Acting as a holder for the extra-point, Jarmon received the ball and rushed to the endzone to commit a two-point conversion.

Sullivan made key passing and running plays, scoring a touchdown run late in the third quarter.

“[Sullivan] got amazing vision,” Jarmon said. “He knows when to take off or when to throw it out.”

Rice was impressed with how the offensive line performed in the matchup.

“We knew we had a good offensive line and they showed out today,” Rice said. “I’m extremely happy with the way everybody played … the resilience that they showed and how focused they were when it got tough for us.”
