Baron Davis talks giving back to South L.A. youth
Compton Mayor Aja Brown, Originals Nation and Trap Heals founder Damon Turner all partnered together to host “ByeCOVID,” a local initiative event where they provided free COVID-19 testing to Compton residents along with care packages to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus. The event serviced over 1,000 people who registered or pre-registered. It was great vibes of live music, food, art, and a group of ambitious volunteers to serve the community. There couldn’t have been a more innovative way to host this event.
We shot ‘What’s Going On’ in Detroit and Flint Michigan, we wanted a place that resonates with the song and the history of Motown, while also remaining relevant to the sociopolitical issues in the music video. The music video took four days to shoot, but I traveled to Michigan a couple weeks early to find the right people. It was very important for us to find real people that resonated with the stories, rather than casting actors. We wanted the history of the song and the communities we filmed in to come through in our video. For example, Steve Smith, who plays the blind man in our music video, actually worked for Motown when ‘What’s Going On’ was originally recorded.
Mayor Eric Garcetti today called for affirmative action in City government and signed an executive directive to study and promote racial equity in City departments. To help lead, coordinate, and drive these efforts, he also named Deputy Mayor Brenda Shockley as L.A.’s first-ever Chief Equity Officer.

The protests across the U.S. have many calling for a renewed national dialogue about race, policing, equity and what it means to be a black person in America today.
And that is good news, said Nicole Mitchell, director of Diversity and Inclusion at Cedars-Sinai.
“We have so many people who want to be allies and to be voices,” Mitchell said.
