“As we express our GRATITUDE, we must never forget that the highest APPRECIATION is not to utter words
but to live by them”. -President John F. Kennedy-

Mere words were inadequate for the Los Angeles NAACP Youth Council to express sincere thanks to twenty-two veterans at their ninth Annual Heroes’ Breakfast. Each year, the Youth Council honors African American Men and Women who rendered service to help to same this country’s freedom.

Some of the Heroes volunteered their service, some were demanded to serve. While protecting this country’s freedom, they never considered race as a barrier, in fact it became an asset because it allowed these brave Americans to have broader perspective of the real meaning of “Freedom and Justice for All.”

The Heroes’ Breakfast was inspired by the Youth Council Advisor, Merelean Wilson. This is the ninth year that the community joined the Youth Council to meet and greet the men and women whose sacrifices help us to understand that; “A total commitment is paramount to reaching the ultimate in performance”.

Sheldon Hudson served as event chair for this memorable occasion. He is the first Youth Council member to present one of our Hero’s Appreciation Award to his/her parent, he presented his mother, Mrs. Lorna Hudson with a Hero’s Appreciation Award. We soon found out why he was so eager to serve as the event chair, he also presented this award to Mr. Raymond Laisure, his uncle.

We enjoyed honoring twenty-three African American Heroes, nine of which are females. One of the Heroes honored is Deputy Chief Regina Scott, the first African American female to be appointed to this position in the Los Angeles Police Department history.

Sincere thanks to those caring parents and members of this supportive community that supported the Youth Council’s efforts.
