Just as four in ten Black-owned businesses closed their doors permanently during the 15-month pandemic shutdown, there was a marked increase in the number of Blacks opening new businesses.  According to a recent report on early stage entrepreneurship by the Kauffman Foundation, during the pandemic, there were more new Black-owned businesses proportionate to the total population than at any time in the past 25 years.

GLAAACC PRESENTS WOMEN IN THE C-SUITE

“What does it mean to have a seat at the table?” was the theme for The Greater Los Angeles African American Chamber of Commerce’s virtual Women in the C – Suite conference on November 4.  Décor Interior Design Chief Executive Officer Ronda Jackson moderated the hour-long discussion that centered on the topics of what it takes to maintain a successful career, open doors for other women and propel the next generation of women leaders. Panelists included Sydney Kamlager, Assemblywoman, 54th District; Kim Carter, partner, Kelley Drye, LLP; Christine Keith, resident, Elite Auto Network; Tameka Raymond, founder, Cult De Jour; and Halleemah Nash, founder, Rosecrans Ventures.

Southern California Edison Sheds Light on Future Pathway to Inclusivity

In this space of reflection and solitude, Southern California Edison (SCE) illuminates their next moves in their journey towards social change. With over 13,000 employees affiliated to this utility firm, extensive research traveled through the company from the top executive level to their field agents. SCE wanted to know their personal social climate within their working sector; reflecting 70% of their employees being women and people of color. Through the “International and Southern California Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Report,” SCE was able to pinpoint and bring a laser focus to opportunities for growth and uplifting their Black constituents that show their loyalty to the company every time they put on the Edison uniform.

Energy and Gas Assistance Funds Provides Utility Assistance to Families in Need

More support with energy bills is now available to people directly affected by the coronavirus pandemic due to job loss, closures, illness, or for seniors. United Way of Greater Los Angeles is partnering with Southern California Edison (SCE) and Southern California Gas Company (SoCalGas) to administer SCE’s Energy Assistance Fund (EAF) and SoCalGas’s Gas Assistance Fund (GAF) programs designed to prevent people from falling into financial hardship. As COVID-19 puts thousands more at risk of financial insecurity, EAF and GAF have extended and increased its maximum assistance available.

For twenty-seven years the Greater Los Angeles African American Chamber of Commerce (GLAAACC) Annual Economic Awards Dinner has been the premiere event of the African American business community.  The event recognizes individuals, small businesses and corporations who have contributed to the economic growth and development of the African American small business community.
