COMMENTARY: “Grateful After the November Mid-Term Results

To further resist the threat of authoritarianism, we must lift up young leaders who will be democracy’s champions for this and future generations. People For the American Way’s Young Elected Officials Network is celebrating the election of young leaders as new members of Congress from across the country: Greg Casar from Austin, Texas; Emilia Sykes from Akron, Ohio; Maxwell Frost from Orlando, Fla.; Summer Lee from Braddock, Pa.; Robert Garcia from Long Beach, Calif.; Sydney Kamlager from Los Angeles, Calif; and Jasmine Crockett from Dallas, Texas. Dozens more were elected to local and state offices, building a crucial leadership pipeline.

Assemblymember Sydney Kamlager-Dove Sails to Victory in 30th Senate District Race

As of press time, State Assembly member Sydney Kamlager-Dove was the projected winner for the 30th Senate District seat with 68% of the vote. The special election was called by Governor Gavin Newsom to fill the seat vacated by current L.A. County Supervisor Holly Mitchell. Kamlager-Dove stands poised to join State Senator Steve Bradford at the State Capitol.

Harris Introduces Comprehensive Legislation to Protect Communities from Growing Threat of Wildfires

U.S. Senator Kamala D. Harris (D-CA) on Friday announced the Wildfire Defense Act, comprehensive legislation to help communities—especially in California—implement science-based methods for mitigating wildfire damage and defending life and property. Harris’ bill would provide local communities with up to $10 million dollars to implement a Community Wildfire Defense Plan to ensure they are resilient in the face of the growing wildfire threat before disaster strikes.
