Again blasting the sheriff’s department’s contention that a 29-year-old man was fatally shot while pointing a gun at deputies in Westmont, attorneys for the man’s family said today an independent autopsy shows he was shot repeatedly while “writhing on the ground in pain.”
The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors is expected to vote today to transfer $25.5 million to the Sheriff’s Department to fund the roll-out of body-worn cameras to five stations over the next year.

The LA County Public Defender’s Office is the lead agency for a $1.2 million grant to divert people suffering from mental illness out of jail and into treatment. LA County has been awarded the two-year grant from the MacArthur Foundation to directly address the over-incarceration of the mentally ill.

The councilman said the man was a “clear 5150 patient” — the term refers to an involuntary psychiatric hold — and that the incident occurred a few blocks over the border from Rancho Palos Verdes, which is patrolled by the LASD.
