St. John to Hold Homegoing Service for Rev. Brooks

A homegoing celebration is set for the Rev. Dr. James A. Brooks, pastor of St. John Missionary Baptist Church, who passed away on May 7. He was 105 years old. The service will take place on Friday, May 19, at 10 a.m., at St. John, 936 W. 49th St., in Los Angeles. A native of Natchez, MS, Pastor Brooks came to Los Angeles in 1946 and over the years, he was active in several religious and community organizations as well as a staunch supporter of local businesses. In 2011, the Los Angeles City Council designated the intersection of 49th St.

The faith community was stunned to learn that the Rev. Dr. James A. Brooks, pastor of St. John Missionary Baptist Church, passed away on May 7. Despite his advanced age, Brooks was actively involved in his church and community. According to reports, he appeared healthy and happy earlier Sunday as his members held a party to celebrate his 105th birthday, which was on May 1.
