Firefighters began to slow the spread of deadly and devastating fires in the Los Angeles area Thursday, Jan. 9, after the ferocious winds that drove the fast-moving flames diminished, but the largest blazes still burned out of control.
Fierce wildfires are raging in the Los Angeles area, fueled by powerful Santa Ana winds, sending residents fleeing from burning homes through flames, ferocious winds and towering clouds of smoke. Thousands of firefighters were battling at least three separate blazes, from the Pacific Coast inland to Pasadena.

They are also trying to determine the extent of the damage to the overall plant population, which consists of just a dozen colonies, all in the mountains surrounding the Los Angeles Basin.
