National Institutes of Health Awards CSU Dominguez Hills Professor $655,000 Grant to Develop Innovative HIV PrEP Uptake Intervention

Grant project addresses disparity in new HIV infections among young gay African American men Carson, CA – The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has awarded California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) Professor of Sociology Matt G. Mutchler a three-year $656,000 grant to address the disproportionate rate of new HIV infections among young African American men and help improve their overall health and well-being. Mutchler and a team of investigators, including student and community health educators, will work with a community advisory board and participants to develop, pilot, and evaluate “PrEP-Talk,” an innovative intervention support program for young gay African American men

HBCUs Testify Before Congress

Tuesday, April 9, Herman Felton, Ph.D., president and CEO of Wiley College in Marshall, Texas, provided testimony before the House panel that decides the funding levels for all federal education programs.  The House Appropriations Committee’s Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Subcommittee received public witness testimony from only 24 individuals to inform their crafting of the upcoming bill to fund the government for fiscal year 2020.  The remarks provided by Dr. Felton focused on the funding and national benefits of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

Reps. Roybal-Allard and Calvert Introduce HEARTS Act to Prioritize Non-Animal Testing Methods in NIH Research

On Valentine’s Day, Congressmembers Lucille Roybal-Allard (CA-40) and Ken Calvert (CA-42) announced their introduction of the HEARTS Act (Humane and Existing Alternatives in Research and Testing Sciences Act) of 2019.  The HEARTS Act (H.R. 1209) requires all National Institutes of Health (NIH) research proposals to purposely consider non-animal testing measures, and prioritize these alternatives when possible.
