L.A. Board of Supervisors Present Motion to Close Men’s Central Jail within a Year

Solis announced the movement on the table that was in deliberation on July 7, to close one of Los Angeles’ largest correctional facilities; Men’s Central Jail looks to be shut down in one year. In retrospect, the supervisors reflected on the role of mental health within the justice system and found that mental health issues should not equate into carrying out time imprisoned without healing treatment.

Oversight Commission Asks Inspector General to Review Deputy Cliques

The watchdog panel that oversees the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department asked the county’s inspector general to conduct an inquiry into secret deputy cliques that have proliferated for years and been implicated in violence against jail inmates and harassment of fellow deputies.

Appeals Court Denies Rehearing of Ex-Sheriff Lee Baca’s Appeal

The 76-year-old former sheriff, who has Alzheimer’s disease, was sentenced in May 2017 to three years in federal prison, but has remained free pending appeal. In February, a three-judge panel of the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in Pasadena rejected his first attempt.

L.A. County Votes to Further Study ‘Reform L.A. Jails’ Initiative

Dozens of advocates of criminal justice reform urged the board to simply adopt the Reform L.A. Jails initiative, which has garnered enough signatures to be certified for the November 2020 ballot. The measure would also prioritize alternatives to incarceration over jail construction.
