COVID Hospitalizations Drop to 600 in Los Angeles County

The number of coronavirus patients in Los Angeles County hospitals has dropped to an even 600, falling from 604 on Saturday, according to the latest state figures. Of those patients, 163 were in intensive care, down from 170 the previous day.

LA City Council OKs Changes to Proof-of-Vaccination Ordinance

A judge today denied an application by the Los Angeles city firefighters’ union for a temporary restraining order preventing enforcement of a mandate requiring its employees to be vaccinated against COVID- 19, saying there was no evidence of immediate harm.

Report Finds Homeless Vets In Los Angeles Struggle With Housing Options

A yearlong study of a group of homeless military veterans in Los Angeles found that few were able to obtain permanent housing over the course of the year despite living near the region’s major VA service center.
  

The project, led by researchers from the nonprofit RAND Corporation and the University of Southern California, found that although the veterans wanted to get off the streets, the housing options available to them frequently did not meet their desire for autonomy, safety, security and privacy. Many study participants lacked confidence about their ability to obtain or retain housing, noting that their past experiences convinced them there were few options and little affordable housing available to veterans.

Founders First CDC to provide $100,000 in grants to diverse small businesses in Los Angeles

The Job Creators Quest Grant will help diverse small businesses continue to create premium wage jobs and act as a recognition of the existing investments these organizations have already made themselves to retain and grow their workforce during the pandemic. Funding for this grant program was facilitated in part by a $1 million grant from the Rockefeller Foundation, in conjunction with Founders First Capital Partners’ recent $9 million Series A financing. Additional partners include ADP, JPMorgan Chase & Co., Union Bank, and Small Business Majority.

Fast-Food Workers Strike in Support of Assembly Bill

Fast-food workers held a statewide strike today, staging rallies outside McDonald’s locations in Monterey Park, South Los Angeles and Hollywood as part of a protest against allegedly unsafe working conditions and to demand passage of Assembly Bill 257.

DTLA Federal Jail Guard Pleads Guilty to Lying to Investigators

A correctional officer at the federal jail in downtown Los Angeles pleaded guilty today to a felony charge of lying to investigators about his sexual activity with an inmate. Abel Concho, 53, of East Los Angeles, pleaded guilty to one count of making false statements, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
