Local Nonprofits Advancing Racial Justice Receive Over $13.5M from Weingart Foundation

  The Weingart Foundation, a private grantmaking foundation, awarded 54 grants totaling over $13.5 million to organizations providing critical services to communities most impacted by systemic racism, advancing racial equity, and building power in historically disinvested neighborhoods. The majority of funds, $8.2M, provide unrestricted support, giving nonprofit partners the flexibility to spend resources where needed. Reflecting the Foundation’s commitment to racial justice, 87% of organizations receiving unrestricted financial support are led by people who are Black, Indigenous, or People of Color (BIPOC).    The Los Angeles Police Department — which has a $1.76 billion budget this fiscal year — had initially submitted a proposal seeking an additional $66.7 million to incorporate 106 recommendations from three reports that found the department mishandled aspects of its response to last year’s protests against racism and police brutality in the wake of George Floyd’s killing in Minneapolis.

Pop-Up Event Brings BET Weekend Festivities to Skid Row

Just blocks away from the Microsoft Theatre, where the awards show took place, is Skid Row, an area in Downtown Los Angeles where an estimated 2,000 peopleare living and experiencing homelessness, mental illness and other traumas. The ailing symptoms of L.A.’s homeless crisis create the essence of the neighborhood, with a majority of its residents being Black.
