The father of President Felix Tshisekedi, opposition icon Etienne Tshisekedi, was laid to rest Saturday in his homeland more than two years after he died during a political stalemate over the country’s long-delayed elections.
Calls for a vote recount, first from defeated opposition candidate Martin Fayulu, are now being heard widely, sparking concerns that outgoing President Joseph Kabila played a behind the scenes role in swinging the election for Felix Tshisekedi, an opposition leader.
Internet links were also down as church and opposition groups defied a ban by authorities to push ahead with the demonstrations.
