On Friday, January 27, Los Angeles County Supervisor Holly Mitchell, the Department of Economic Opportunity, business and community leaders launched the Fair Chance Hiring Program designed to create hiring practices with the goal of getting 200 local businesses to commit to employing system-impacted individuals this year.
As part of its commitment to strengthening communities by addressing critical needs that help advance racial equality and economic opportunity, Bank of America has awarded $11 million to 174 local nonprofits across greater Los Angeles last year.
Everytable, the Los Angeles-based social enterprise seeking to end food inequality by making healthy food affordable, convenient and accessible for all, has received a total of $2.5 million in program-related investments (PRI) from Annenberg Foundation and The California Wellness Foundation (Cal Wellness) to support the development and implementation of a pioneering social equity franchise program. The $1.5 million in funding from Cal Wellness and $1 million from the Annenberg Foundation will allow Everytable to foster economic empowerment among entrepreneurs from marginalized communities. Everytable plans to open 25 franchises owned by entrepreneurs of color from underserved neighborhoods in Southern California over the next five years.
The Los Angeles City Council unanimously approved the appointment of Karim Webb to the Los Angeles Board of Airport Commissioners (BOAC). The seven-member board governs Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA). It is comprised of public-spirited business and civic leaders who are appointed by the Mayor and approved by the City Council.
This month, the Sentinel met with Everytable chef, Zach Thomas for an exclusive tour of the kitchen to witness the love and colorful flavors that go into each dish. The Sentinel also spoke with Chef Zach about the company’s inspiration behind the ingredients and spices used in the dishes as well as the human right of affordable healthy food for people of color.
The Compton store, the largest Everytable store to date, gave away 500 meals last Wednesday.
