UPDATE: CALTRANS PAUSES SALE OF HAWKINS BURGERS PROPERTY

Following a story reported in last week’s Los Angeles Sentinel regarding Hawkins House of Burgers and Caltrans, the California Department of Transportation has decided to pause the sale of the state-owned parcel of land in the hopes of resolving the land dispute with one of the City of Watts most iconic Black-owned businesses.

Caltrans Aims to Shut Down 80-Year-Old Hawkins Burgers

The popular hamburger spot known as the “The House,” located at 11603 Slater Street in Watts, just east of Central and South of Imperial Hwy, has survived for the past 80 years. Presently, on June 18, 2021, Cynthia Hawkins, who now runs the business started by her parents, James and Elsie Hawkins, is fighting a new kind of battle.
