Student Athlete of the Week: Sherilynne Chensam

Hamilton senior Sherilynne Chensam has always loved playing basketball but competing would occasionally become overwhelming to her. When she felt her passion for basketball slipping away, she took a two-year hiatus during her freshman and sophomore years.

Student Athlete of the Week: Shelbi Schauble

Shelbi Schauble recently finished her first season with the UCLA Bruins track and field team. She competed in the triple jump for the Rafer Johnson/ Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational, getting 10.58m (34-8.50). Schauble noted she was feeling “a lot of emotions” during her Bruin debut.

Student Athlete of the Week: Dericka Braden

Sophomore track and field runner Dericka Braden is eager to compete this season. To prepare for track season, Braden competes with the Cal State Los Angeles Cross Country team. She mentioned how cross country has made her stronger. “Cross country, at first it’s tough to become accustomed to running for so long and learning how to pace yourself,” Braden said. “In cross country, you have to dial back a little bit so you can last the whole workout.” A proud moment for Braden was when she qualified for the women’s indoor track squad last season. Harbor Teacher goes Undefeated in Ocean League

Youth was an important factor for the Harbor Teacher High School Monarchs Cross Country team for the 2015-2016 season. This season was Head Coach Fatima Iqbal-Zubair’s first season leading Cross Country at Harbor Teacher. The cross-country team had seen much success by going undefeated in all league meets this season and becoming Ocean League Champions, according to Zubair. “In the league championship, which was the beginning of we actually got a double,” said Zubair. “Girls and boys both won so we won a double league championship.” This year was the first time in school history the cross-country team earned
