Maxine Waters Misses Anniversary Due to COVID

Congresswoman Maxine Waters, who played a critical part in quelling the emotions during the 1992 L.A. uprising, was unable to participate in the city’s 30th anniversary programs.  Just prior to the festivities, Waters tested positive for COVID-19 and still remains in quarantine.  

Remembering Miss Edna Hortense Smith’s 100-Year-Old Legacy

Edna Hortense Smith was born in Chipley, Florida on September 21, 1921, and celebrated her 100th birthday with her family and friends in Hawthorn, CA, where she was a resident.  She was a teacher in Florida before moving to California, where she continued her career in education. Ms. Edna was a former graduate of Pepperdine University and was a special education teacher for LAUSD.  She was also a WATTS librarian and an income tax specialist. Ms. Edna had over 17 grandchildren. She was cared for by her grandchildren, Di Laudia and CDell Sims.  She loved to watch CNN news daily

Rep. Waters to Join Congressional Delegation to San Diego for Christening of USNS John Lewis

Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-CA), Chairwoman of the House Committee on Financial Services, will join a Congressional delegation to San Diego to participate in the Christening Ceremony for the USNS John Lewis, the first ship in the T-AO Fleet Oiler Program. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) is leading the Congressional delegation. The program is dedicated in honor of the late Congressman John Lewis of Georgia. The ceremony will take place July 17, 2021, one year after the Congressman’s passing.

House of Representatives Passes George Floyd Justice in Policing Act

“For too long, we have endured the pain of watching or seeing the deaths of people of color, particularly Black men and women, at the hands of rogue police officers who operate with impunity and take it upon themselves to be the arbiters of life and death,” Congresswoman Maxine Waters declared. “The trauma that our communities feel is only made worse by the ways in which we are forced to reckon with the reality that Black people are over 3.5 times more likely to be killed by police than white people, and Black teenagers are 21 times more likely to be killed by police than white teenagers.”

A town hall held via telephone, provided vital information regarding pandemic policy changes, finances of community projects, as well as COVID-19 vaccination efforts and updates across Los Angeles. Director of Los Angeles Department of Public Health, Dr. Barbara Ferrer, and staff directors at the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Financial Services, Charla Ouertatani and Kristofor Erickson, were among the participating speakers.
