Sheard Elected COGIC Presiding Bishop, Blake Requests Emeritus Status

The Right Reverend J. Drew Sheard has been elected presiding bishop and chief apostle of the Church of God in Christ, Inc., the nation’s largest Pentecostal denomination of more than six million members.

The announcement was made on March 20, following the Quadrennial Election, which was held virtually.
Sheard replaces the Right Reverend Charles E. Blake, Sr., pastor of West Angeles COGIC in Los Angeles, who served 13 years as the chief apostle and presiding bishop.

Bishop Charles Harrison Mason was the founder and first senior bishop of the Church of God in Christ (COGIC), the largest African-American Pentecostal church in the United States. Born to former slaves Jerry and Eliza Mason in Shelby County, Tenn., on Sept. 8, 1864, Mason worked with his family as a sharecropper and did not receive a formal education as a child. But at an early age, he was influenced by his parents’ religion. COGIC Southwest Jurisdiction plans 55th Women’s Convention

The Department of Women of California Southwest Jurisdiction will convene their 55th Annual Women’s Convention on Monday, August 10, through Friday, August 14, at New Jerusalem Church of God in Christ, 420 South Santa Fe Avenue in Compton. Mother Joan Walker is the jurisdictional supervisor of women and president of the Convention. Bishop Hillrie Murphy is the jurisdictional prelate and Dr. William Atlas is the host pastor. The theme for the convention is ‘An Urgent Call to Committed Holy Women’ based on Jeremiah 9:17.
