The Rev. Dr. Charley Hames, Jr., most recently the pastor of Beebe Memorial Cathedral CME Church in Oakland, is now the new presiding prelate of the Ninth Episcopal District of Christian Methodist Episcopal Church.
The Los Angeles – San Diego District of the CME Church sponsored “Love for Your Journey” on March 27, and the response was overwhelming. A huge crowd tuned in for the international, intercontinental, interdenominational and interracial virtual event. The Christian Coalition, a collaboration of the Christian community that includes the CME Church’s L.A.-S.D. Department of Evangelism and the Christians 4 Salvation outreach ministry, sponsored the program, which focused on the emotional and spiritual impact COVID-19. More than 100 people came out to The Quiet Cannon Restaurant to salute Bettye Faye Nichols, the director emerita of the CME Southern California Region Department of Public Relations. Nichols, a long-time Sentinel contributor, has devoted 30+ years to publicizing the activities of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, both on a local and national level. The event, held on March 7, was presented to recognize her legacy of dedicated professional service. The Christian Methodist Episcopal Church recently held its 33rd Southern California Annual Conference at Phillips Temple C.M.E. Church in Los Angeles. The theme was “The Investment Factor: Expressing God’s Love through Missions and Outreach!” Bishop Bobby R. Best, presiding prelate of the Ninth Episcopal District, requested Bishop Teresa Jefferson-Snorton, presiding prelate of the Fifth Episcopal District, to oversee the proceedings in his absence. Other leaders included the Rev. Travis A. Morris, host presiding elder of the Los Angeles-San Diego District; the Rev. Mark A. Hardin, presiding elder of the Los Angeles District; and the Rev. Bernard M. Jackson, host pastor.
The Southern California Region of the CME Church will open their Spring Convocation and Quadrennial Celebration on Friday, April 13, at Lewis Metropolitan CME Church, 4900 S. Western Ave., in Los Angeles. Bishop Bobby R. Best, presiding prelate of the CME Ninth Episcopal District, will oversee the gathering. The Rev. Travis Morris is the host pastor. Mrs. Bettye Faye Nichols was honored on February 5 during the Los Angeles District Conference of the Southern California Region of the Ninth Episcopal District of the CME Church. A missionary for more than 34 years, Mrs. Nichols was recognized for her outstanding and dedicated service at all levels of the organization. District Presiding Elder and Pastor Willie B. E.
