The recent killing of George Floyd by Minneapolis police officers reminded me of the long history of racism in America and why African Americans must continuously seek justice as demonstrated by the Black Lives Matter campaign.

Transfiguration Catholic School Celebrates New Renovations

Transfiguration Catholic School held a grand opening on Aug. 16, to show off the newly renovated campus and a big crowd came out for the occasion. Thanks to a major donation by Shea Family Charities, the school now boasts new doors, windows and floors. Also, a new playground and benches will be installed soon. “It was so rewarding and such a blessing to see this project come to fruition,” said Principal Evelyn Rickenbacker, the chief administrator of the 225-student body. The attractive Florence-Firestone community in unincorporated South Los Angeles has changed dramatically over the years, according to the new book, “A Paseo Through Time in Florence-Firestone,” which offers historical background tied to the area’s progression. Author Jeannene Przyblyski uses colorful maps, captivating photos, and descriptive text to reveal the background and current status of Florence-Firestone. Looking as far back as the 1950s, the book – written in English and Spanish – covers the community’s evolution from gangs and drug dealings to its present residential and major commercial-enterprise area. Many guests awaited the arrival of Emma Bradley, first lady of the General Assembly of the Church of the Living God, in the church’s reception hall to surprise her at a dinner birthday party, and they were not disappointed when she appeared in total shock.
