As we remember and mourn the loss of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., we can take inspiration and solace from, not only his written speeches, but also in the works of a number of esteemed Black writers who themselves mourned, coped and mapped out their own blueprint for a better nation through their art in 1968.
Walker’s legacy of activism and storytelling was on full display at the event, which was held at the Georgia Writers Museum and included a day of activities and events to honor Walker’s life and achievements.

Alice Walker won the Pulitzer Prize and the American Book Award for her third novel, “The Color Purple,” which was made into an internationally popular film by Steven Spielberg. Her other best-selling novels, which have been translated into more than two dozen languages, include “By the Light of My Father’s Smile,” “Possessing the Secret of Joy” and “The Temple of My Familiar.”
