“To Dance with Judy” Takes Place in 1954, when two Black children appear with Judy Garland in the film “A Star Is Born.”

African Americans in Hollywood, life in the 1950s and the pursuit of the American Dream are some of the themes presented at a staged workshop presentation of “To Dance with Judy,” October 8 at 8:00 p.m. at The Blank Theatre, 6500 Santa Monica Blvd., in Hollywood. Suggested donation is $15. Written by Chicago playwright Osa Buchner, “To Dance with Judy” is inspired by true events: two African American children dance with the legendary Judy Garland in the 1954 film “A Star Is Born.” Written from the perspective of the two stage mothers, the play touches on the achievements of Blacks in 1950s Hollywood and how each mother has a different idea of the “American Dream.”  “To Dance with Judy” cast members are Taylor Hawthorne, Brigid Kelly and Diana Rene.  The presentation will be directed by Christopher James Raymond, The Blank Theatre’s associate artistic director.

“To Dance with Judy” is part of The Blank Theatre’s Living Room Series, a new play development program which embodies The Blank’s commitment to developing new work by diverse voices from both established and emerging writers.

Founded in 1990, The Blank Theatre is committed to the enrichment of Hollywood’s cultural life through production of first-rate theatre, education of current and future artists, and creation of groundbreaking new works for the theatrical repertoire.
