I’m writing to inform you of the steps my Office is taking to ensure equitable distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine. As you might know, Council District 9 is among the hardest hit communities with the most COVID-19 cases and coronavirus-related deaths.
Of all the symptoms he experienced, he says the worst one was the virus’ effect on his mental health.
Councilmember Marqueece Harris-Dawson, channeling his instincts as an organizer, launched a community-based effort to get South Los Angeles residents that are 65 and older vaccinated as quickly as possible. Harris-Dawson and his staff personally called nearly 1,000 seniors who had participated in the Emergency Senior Meals program that provided over 50,000 meals to seniors during the pandemic’s onset. This time, the councilmember was calling to connect them to local vaccines rather than free meals prepared by local restaurants. Despite the different goal, the team had incredible success calling residents 65 and older. Over 2,000 seniors and healthcare workers received vaccines at local sites across South Los Angeles as a result.
Mobile COVID-19 Vaccination Clinic: The First to Come to District 9
Mayor Eric Garcetti announced a mobile vaccination program today aimed at bringing COVID-19 vaccines to neighborhoods with the highest rates of the virus and coronavirus-related deaths.
The awareness brought on by activist Martin Luther King Jr., outlined a plan for empowerment; he addressed it to a society founded on freedom. King spoke of unity in a time of division, to celebrate his life and reflect on what he stood for, Councilmember Mark Ridley-Thomas paid tribute to King’s accomplishments; by curating the 29th Annual Empowerment Congress Summit during the week the nation celebrated Martin Luther King Day.

million thanks to HHH, a $1.2 billion bond issued by Councilmember Harris-Dawson and supported by millions of voters to create housing and provide services for individuals and families that are experiencing homelessness.
The selection of California Senator Kamala Harris to join and then win the nation’s Vice-Presidency gave unprecedented hope to Black women across the nation. Not only had a woman broken a glass ceiling in professional development; she was also Black and a graduate of Howard University, one of the nation’s premier Historically Black Institutions.
