Ron Finley, a South L.A. conservationist known for his renegade gardening, participates with more than 20 artists in the Getty’s region-wide initiative “PST ART: Art and Science Collide” with the Hammer presents “Breath(e): Toward Climate and Social Justice.”
The environmental art exhibit addresses the climate, issues of equity, and social justice. Finley’s mission is for people to recognize their connection to nature and emphasizes the need for a healthy planet.
“I want people to come so I can change their DNA. We need to realize that we only got one planet,” he said.

The massive elaborate and ornate gate at the entrance leads to a maze of enchanting plant-life, exploring the concept of nature as both art and inspiration. Within the crafted verdure are treasures of living and breathing flowers, herbs, vegetables, fruits, shrubs, trees, grass, earth elements, and Finley’s renown handcrafted shovels.
“This is nature and art. Nature is art. Where do colors come from? Where does sound come from? There is no separation,” said Finley.
The importance of healthy food growing is present throughout the exhibit. “With most artist, their work isn’t edible; you can eat my art.”
The free exhibit opens at the Hammer Museum in the City of Westwood on Saturday, Sept. 14, and runs through Saturday, Jan. 5.
