Another chapter in the continuing saga of Bernard “The Executioner” Hopkins takes place in just a few weeks on October 15 when he faces Chad Dawson at the Staples Center to defend his Ring Magazine and World Boxing Council light heavyweight titles.
Hopkins currently has a ring record of 52-5 with 34 knockouts and he continues to amaze us fighting at 46 years of age. He’ll be up against a very ring savvy opponent in Dawson, who at age 29 has a respectable record of 30-1 with 17 knockouts. This should make for an interesting bout as Hopkins continues his effort to fight until he turns 50.
In other news, Devon Alexander has ended his contract with Don King and has now signed with Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions. He’s also decided to move up in weight and fight at 147 lbs.
There is talk that his first fight at that weight will possibly be against Andre Berto. In addition to that, he has started his own promotional company called The Great Promotions.
Former WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz who continues to demand a rematch from Floyd Mayweather, says that if he doesn’t get one he would like to fight Manny Pacquiao. The only thing about that is that Pacquiao has to get past Juan Manuel Marquez in November for that to happen. And even if Pacquiao is victorious, most ringside observers would rather see him fight Mayweather.
And speaking of Mayweather, say what you want about him, he displayed nothing but class and character at the post-fight press conference.
When he was asked what was the most important element that he employed during his sixteen-month lay-off and he replied, “Hard work and dedication. Getting up at 3 o’clock in the morning and running 7 miles, every day and staying in the gym.”
Former light heavyweight champion Jean Pascal of Quebec, Canada, is looking for another fight. A reported deal to fight IBF champion Tavoris Cloud recently fell through with Don King, who promotes Cloud.
When asked who would he like to fight, Pascal replied, “I will fight anybody that comes in front of me. I just want the right deal.”
There is a possibility that he could fight his fellow Canadian, Lucian Bute the guy that nobody seems to want to fight.
